William G. Guerin is Of Counsel at Schmeiser Olsen’s Massachusetts office, where he advises clients on U.S. and international patent prosecution, intellectual property portfolio development, due diligence for corporate transactions, patent validity and infringement analyses, and licensing and technology transfer agreements. He brings deep technical and legal experience to complex intellectual property matters across electrical engineering, software, physics, and optics-based technologies.
With a career spanning advanced engineering, scientific research, and legal practice, Bill delivers highly strategic and technically rigorous intellectual property solutions that support innovation, commercialization, and long-term portfolio value.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Bill has extensive experience prosecuting patent applications in the electrical, software, and physics disciplines, with a focus on optical systems and optical networks, analog and digital circuits, image processing, optoelectronic devices, radar systems, internet technologies, and semiconductor processing. His practice also includes intellectual property due diligence in support of mergers, acquisitions, and corporate transactions, as well as licensing and technology transfer matters.
Before entering legal practice, Bill served as a member of the technical staff at MIT Lincoln Laboratory, working in the Optical Communications Technology, Laser Radar Measurements, and Optical Systems Engineering groups. He also held engineering roles at Perkin-Elmer Corporation in the Optical Group, where he supported advanced optical and imaging systems development.
Bill began his legal career as an associate at a Boston-based law firm. In 2002, he co-founded Guerin & Rodriguez LLP, a Massachusetts intellectual property law firm, and served in a leadership role that helped guide the firm’s growth to national recognition. In 2013, Guerin & Rodriguez LLP merged with Schmeiser Olsen, where Bill continues his practice at the firm’s Marlborough, Massachusetts office.
